Meet the Artist: CAMO

SAY HELLO TO CAMO
It’s hard to put into words how impressed we were when we heard CAMO’s sound. And when we’re enthusiastic, it’s usually for an obvious reason. Early 2000s rhythms, classic 90s stabs, with a live, jam-based workflow — CAMO blends them into raw, percussive techno full of tension, funk, and momentum. At MEUK we just love his practical approach with stripped-back drum workouts and hardgroove influences, built from scratch.
And with his ‘Locked N Loaded’ EP on MEUK Records, CAMO delivers you four powerful DJ tools — made to be layered, looped, and worked into high-energy sets. Designed with a simple goal: to make everybody dance and create moments of energy and connection on the dance floor and beyond.
To get to know CAMO, we spoke with him about his journey from hip-hop to techno, his unique creative workflow, and the old-school influences we all love so much.
We’d love to know more about your musical journey. Can you take us back to the beginning?
“I’ve been fascinated by rhythmic dance music for as long as I can remember. But my actual production journey started around 2014 — mainly making dusty, crusty hip-hop loopers on the SP-404SX, stuck at 84 BPM.
That changed when I discovered Chicago footwork. It felt like the opposite of what I was doing: fast, intense, energetic — but still based on rhythm and raw expression. I fell in love with the sound, but also the energy of the dancers and the scene. It unlocked something.
When I moved to Madrid last year (I’m originally from Tucson, Arizona), techno really came into the picture. At first, I was just curious, but once I dug into early 2000s tribal techno, I got hooked. Those looping grooves, the percussive drive — it hit the same nerve as footwork but in a completely different way. From then, I started producing techno and haven’t stopped since.”
Can you pinpoint what it was about techno that made you hooked?
“It’s the energy, 100%. And the elements I particularly love in techno are the funk, the attitude and the groove. The looping nature of techno triggers something primal — it makes you want to create energy through movement, expressing yourself within those pounding grooves. That’s what I love about techno and where I want to tap into with my productions and DJ-sets.”
Speaking of dj-ing, you’re even practicing the vinyl now, can you tell us a bit more about that??
“Yes! I’m currently learning to mix vinyl and — ooooooooh man — what a delight. It’s been a rewarding challenge, but I love the physicality and intentionality that comes with it. It forces you to really listen and interact with the music in a different way.
I challenge myself to master it completely, because it forces me to go back to the roots of mixing, aka the old school approach.”

We love your old school, groove-driven sound. How would you describe your own techno sound?
“My sound is definitely rooted in the 2000s techno. My tracks are quite percussive oriented, with attention to call and response to create multiple grooves within. Sample chopping is also a main portion of my production and layering techniques to keep things alive and evolving.”
We ask it everyone and it’s a tricky question: what does the concept of techno in general mean to you?
“For me techno means creation, energy, and connection. First and foremost: creation, without experimentation we don’t evolve. Energy helps nurture the sound and guide you through your journey, while connecting with others around you keeps you in the moment.”
Relating to creation, we saw you work a lot with hardware; we are very curious; can you tell us a bit more about your creative workflow?
“My creative workflow is mainly based on intuition and being in the moment. I produce in Ableton and always keep the loop running while I work — even when I’m just browsing samples. That way, every sound I add is tested in real time.
Sampling is key for me. I often dig through old 90s sample CDs, reworking those sounds into new contexts and blending them with modern textures. This helps me find a balance between rawness and freshness. And yes, I also use hardware — like the Bitstream 3X for drumming and the Novation Launch Control XL for tweaking synths and effects. I play all MIDI parts by hand, no quantize. This way I can add my personal funk in every rhythm.
For me, it’s all about combining old and new, analog and digital, and mixing production and jamming. That’s where I find my flow.”
That’s probably why we like your style so much! How do you translate this to your DJ sets in practice, and what’s your approach?
“Yeah, ever since I started producing techno, I’ve created several series that I’ve independently released on Bandcamp. I wanted to reinforce the old-school techno sound that I truly believe in. Sharing what you truly believe in is an important part of self-expression. Glad you like it! After all, my ultimate goal with my music is to make people dance and connect.”
It definitely helped with our connection! Speaking of which, how did you come across our label? And what made you decide to release on MEUK Records?
“I found MEUK Records by browsing on Bandcamp for new music and inspiration. The labels motto immediately resonated with me: “embracing the imperfect and unexpected in techno”. Many people, including myself, strive for perfection in our passion. But the beauty lies in the journey of imperfections and lessons learned that come to us in this life. Then I listened to the releases and due to the raw aesthetic, the type of grooves, I felt this was a label I could connect with. So, I took a chance, reached out, and here we are. I’m grateful to be part of this.”
We’re so glad you did and incredibly excited about your upcoming release. Can you share some details about your Locked N Loaded EP?
“The four tracks of the Locked N Loaded EP are, like all my productions, a mix of analog and digital sounds. With chopped samples form 90s CDs, combined with modern influences. They’re built around heavy percussive grooves, with classic stabs at their core. All tracks are created and titled in the moment, all done with intuition and feeling. I don’t follow any rules for this. Above all, they’re designed to make you dance — and connect.”
