Meet the Artist: Perroxx

29 September 2025
Say hello to Perroxx

Some releases are extra special to us. In this case, because we’ve seen Perroxx’s electronic music journey develop from the very beginning to this moment. That’s why we already knew that Perroxx knows how to captivate you in a playful way in his sets. And it’s fantastic to see him now convey that exact same feeling in his productions.

So, you can imagine how incredibly proud we are to announce his Dream EP on MEUK Records. With the Dream EP, Perroxx takes you on a journey through four hypnotic yet playful tracks. Expect synth-driven grooves that keep the dance floor engaged and moving until dawn.

To give you a sense of who Perroxx is, we sat down with him to talk about his roots, his versatile musicality, and his journey in techno leading up to his upcoming release.

TO BEGIN, COULD YOU SHARE THE STORY OF HOW MUSIC FIRST ENTERED YOUR LIFE?

“Music has been part of my life from the very beginning. My father was the lead singer of a Surinamese band, and as a kid I was always by his side at rehearsals and shows. The drums, bass, and guitars fascinated me, and whenever he brought instruments home, I couldn’t resist picking them up. Drums were my first real passion, but over time I also explored piano and later bass guitar.

And in my late teens I played bass in a salsa band, while also joining a small Surinamese youth band. Performing live in a band gave me a strong foundation in rhythm, which has always stayed with me. Even when football started taking up more of my time, music never really left. I played drums on whatever I could find — pots, pans, even buckets — or experiment with keyboards. Eventually I moved on to electronic drums and synthesizers.”

HOW DID TECHNO FIND ITS WAY INTO YOUR MUSICAL JOURNEY?

“It wasn’t until my late twenties or early thirties that my brother pushed me toward electronic music. At first, I wasn’t convinced. The vibe around hard, stomping sounds didn’t appeal to me, and I thought music made on laptops wasn’t “real” music. But then he took me to Awakenings, and that changed everything. I discovered the depth and diversity of techno. Soon after, I bought a laptop, started experimenting with Ableton, and realized I could merge my background in live instruments with electronic production. That’s when my journey into techno truly began.”

DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT ULTIMATELY APPEALED TO YOU IN TECHNO?

“What drew me in most were the subtle details — the melodies, the textures, the little sounds that returned in unexpected ways. I became fascinated not only with the energy on the dancefloor, but also with the craft behind it: how repetition, small variations, and layers of sound can create an entire journey.

But above all, it was the rhythm that caught me. I quickly realized techno wasn’t nearly as harsh or monotone as I had once assumed. It could be hypnotic, playful, and deeply layered. That discovery made me fall in love with the genre.”

YOU BOUGHT A LAPTOP, STARTED ABLETON… WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

“That’s where it all really started. I dove headfirst into Ableton, and from there it became years of experimenting, learning, and shaping my own sound. Tutorials were a constant teacher — every technique, every new idea, I’d look it up and practice it endlessly.

But what really accelerated my growth were the people I met along the way. Denn Punk was one of them. We spent hours in the studio together, and from him I learned a lot about arrangement, structure, and later mixing techniques. I also attended masterclasses and even had one-on-one sessions with established producers in the scene. Each of those experiences gave me tools and perspectives that helped me develop my skills.

And because of my musical background, I was able to absorb things quickly. I already had a strong sense of rhythm and sound. Even when I played bass guitar years ago, I never relied on reading notes — it was always about intuition, about feeling. That same intuition helped me translate ideas into electronic music. It wasn’t about theory; it was about expression — and that’s still how I create today.”

DID YOU ALSO START DJING AT THE SAME TIME?

“Yes, around the same time I began producing electronic music, I started exploring DJing as well. It felt like a natural extension — another way of channeling that same rhythm and energy. At first, I recorded mixes at home, teaching myself through trial and error. Then I began putting out podcasts, and eventually played my first gigs, one of them was actually at the very first MEUK event.

But I’ve always seen DJing and producing as two very different worlds. DJing is fun, but producing is where my heart really lies. If you asked me to choose, I’d rather spend my energy developing as a producer, pushing my sound further, than chasing gigs. For me, creating music is the foundation — it’s the reason I do all of this.”

IS THE CHARACTERISTIC OF YOUR SOUND THE SAME AS WHAT INITIALLY ATTRACTED YOU TO TECHNO?
“Yes, you could say it still defines my productions today. In my tracks, there always has to be a story — a sense of direction that carries you through. The synthesizer usually takes the lead; I build almost everything around it. Often, I even mute the hi-hats while producing, because I want the synth to tell the story first. The recurring little sounds I choose, makes it hypnotic, especially when paired with FX that add another dimension — sometimes subtle, sometimes overwhelming, but always part of the narrative. Kicks and toms are prominent in my mixes; I like them upfront and driving. Rhythm is central to all of it, and I think that goes back to my Surinamese roots. For me, it all started with the drums, and that pulse has never left.”
WHAT ROLE DOES MINDSET PLAY IN YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
“Mindset is everything. Producing and DJing aren’t just about technical skills — they require patience, consistency, and trust in your own path. That doesn’t mean isolating yourself, but it does mean focus. I have a demanding day job and a family with young children who need my attention. Still, at least one day a week I lock myself in the studio so I can work for hours at a time. For me, it’s all about that focus. Not only in those dedicated hours, but also in keeping sight of the long-term goals.”
COMPARED TO WHEN YOU STARTED PRODUCING, WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST STEPS FOR YOU?
“The biggest step has been realizing I’m actually ready to release music. In the early days, I was mainly listening to other artists, trying to figure out how they did it. Now, I’ve reached a point where I can both recognize those techniques and create them myself — in my own way. My tracks feel more complete, more true to me. Of course, there’s always room to grow — I’ll never stop learning or experimenting. But I’ve also learned that at some point you have to stop overthinking and just take that step. Good is good enough. Releasing music isn’t the end of the journey; it’s the beginning of a new one.”
WE KNOW IT FEELS LIKE ASKING FOR THE SAKE OF ASKING, BUT WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO RELEASE ON MEUK RECORDS?
“For me, it feels completely natural to do my first release with MEUK Records. I witnessed the start of MEUK, and my experience has been that it isn’t just a label that puts out music — they really invest in their artists where they can. For example, Denn pays meticulous attention to the final mixing stage, while Eva takes the time to guide me through every step of the release process, from the smallest details to the bigger picture. That kind of support makes all the difference, especially when you’re releasing for the first time. Like I said, Denn Punk and I go way back, and they both have always encouraged me to push forward. So for me, it was only logical that my first EP would come out on MEUK.”
LET’S CLOSE WITH YOUR UPCOMING EP. WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT IN TERMS OF SOUND AND STORY?
“This EP really feels like a step forward in making dreams come true, one release at a time. Dream is the track where I managed to pour all my energy and emotions into the music — it represents a moment of full expression for me. Hurry Up And Buy carries a bit of humor; it’s an inside joke that most producers and labels will instantly recognize. And then there’s Kantelpunt — a track that, to me, reflects this exact release as a turning point in my journey. Together, the four tracks form a complete story: hypnotic and driving, yet also playful and personal.”
