SAY HELLO TO GI-RO47
We’re always immediately excited when we encounter young, emerging talent. And with his profound take on techno and his dedication to hardware performance and production, GI-RO47 is definitely one of them. That impression was confirmed when we met him in person, which resulted in his release on MEUK Records.
As for his deep and atmospheric techno, we’re especially impressed by his sense of imperfection and the raw analogue soul of his sound. If you listen closely, you will feel his quintessential human quest for expression and connection, encouraging you to do the same.
To introduce you to Arnhem-based artist GI-RO47, we had him answer some of the questions you’ve come to expect from us. In this interview he talks about his musical background, his views on the techno community, his technical, hardware-based workflow and of course his upcoming EP on MEUK Records.
What sparked your initial desire to start making music?
My musical journey began when I was twelve, sparked by an obsession with big EDM artists of the time. Inspired by their sound, I wanted to create music of my own and gradually started figuring out how. Before I knew it, I had my first DAW open, and that’s where the journey began.
What does techno represent for you now, beyond just a genre?
As I immersed myself deeper into the techno scene, I felt that the music was really driven by community, intention, and a clear statement, music with meaning.
In a time that feels increasingly dystopian and where freedom of expression is more and more under pressure, techno feels to me like a theme of rebellion. Dark, deep, hypnotic sounds that blast through the night. Enabling spaces for people to freely express their identity and sexuality. A place where you can find likeminded people and where you can be who you are, no matter what happens in the outside world.
How do you translate this to your own sound?
I translate that mindset into hypnotic sounds with a strong sense of atmosphere and deep, groovy rhythms. My music is built to create space, dark, immersive environments where people can lose themselves and disconnect from the outside world. Repetition and groove play an important role, not as something static, but as a way to build tension and intention over time. The focus is always on feeling and movement rather than perfection, allowing the sound to stay raw, human, and expressive.
You also perform live. What drives you in this?
In a time where technology increasingly threatens artists and perfection is becoming the norm, I feel more drawn than ever to live techno performance. Nothing in nature is truly perfect, its beauty lies in its imperfections. As technology continues to advance, and especially with the rapid rise of AI, I’ve come to value these imperfections even more. When something becomes too perfect, it starts to feel unreal. There is something deeply honest and powerful about live created sound, guided by intuition and creativity in the moment. The flaws and unpredictability of a live performance are what make it feel human, raw, and real.
Can you walk us through your creative workflow in your studio?
I work in FL Studio. I’m drawn to its messy workflow and the freedom it offers, nothing feels fixed or restrictive, and I can place ideas wherever they make sense in the moment. That flexibility mirrors the way I think.
I use the same hardware for both production and live performance. My current setup includes a Perkons HD-01, Korg Minilogue, Behringer Edge, and a range of external effects. All of my synths are permanently set up on my desk, which allows me to work intuitively and spontaneously. Whenever I have a few free minutes and feel inspired, I’ll program a short sequence. Both the Perkons and Minilogue allow me to save sequences and sounds, which I often revisit and refine over time. When I have longer sessions available, I return to these fragments and develop them into full tracks.
When I’m away from my studio and working only on my laptop, I rely mainly on Serum 2. I don’t use samples, nor do I save my own sounds to reuse later, everything is created from scratch each time. This approach ensures that every track has its own character. Because techno is such a minimal genre, I want full control over every detail, every time, at any given moment. Beyond that, I simply love the process of sound design itself.
What made MEUK Records feel like the right home for your music?
I am drawn to MEUK’s strong sense of community and very personal approach, which gives the label a warm and welcoming vibe. Their releases have a great balance between groove and hypnotic depth, with a clear and consistent vision for high-quality production.
Can you tell us more about your upcoming EP and what idea or feeling is the common thread?
The Orbit EP consists of four completely different tracks that still tell a coherent story. Each track on this album was built entirely from scratch, created with a unique vision and workflow, and true to my current process.
On Drifting, my goal was to create a vibe that’s both jazzy and slightly alien. The chords deliver the jazzy feel, supported by a groovy bassline, while subtle, trippy vocals of my own add a personal, human layer. The low synth reinforces the alien atmosphere, completing the track’s distinct mood.
Orbit is probably my personal favorite. Every now and then, I enjoy exploring a more melodic approach—techno’s minimalism is core to my sound, but diving into melody helps ensure my minimalism remains intentional. Orbit perfectly showcases this melodic side while staying true to the techno aesthetic.
Nebula with its metallic, industrial textures and unique kick stands out as the album’s high-energy centerpiece. I wanted a track with a distinctive kick, and I think it came out perfectly. What excites me most about this track is the natural flow of its dynamics: each element builds and moves together like a river, rising to a climax before gently decreasing in energy.
Equilibrium is a more percussive piece, yet every element is completely synthetic.
All sounds originate from my hardware and coalesce into a high-energy track guided by the flowing, resonant filter of my Minilogue, played entirely by hand. I tweaked every sound by hand throughout the track to create a natural, evolving flow.
