Meet the artist: Echofaze

At MEUK, we were immediately captivated by Echofaze’s raw and hypnotic grooves. And we were very impressed when we heard about his evolution from industrial techno towards the groove techno that we love so much ourselves.

Wherever it comes from and wherever it is headed, we are glad that we connected with Echofaze at this point in his musical journey. Because his current grooves are merciless. It is raw, hypnotic, and features a fusion of deep atmospheres and relentless energy.

In this interview, we delve deeper into his musical development, starting where it all began and ending with his upcoming release on MEUK Records.

Looking back, how did your journey into electronic music begin?

My first inspiration came from the I Love Techno festival sets from the early 2000s in Belgium. I started learning to DJ when I was around 13 years old, so I’ve now been playing for more than 23 years. In the beginning, I was mainly into minimal, electro, clash and breaks, although techno was always a big part of my musical taste.

When did you realize techno was the direction you wanted to follow?

Around 2006, there was an era that today many people call hardgroove, although back then we simply called it hard techno. At that time, I heard many great artists playing here in Malta, and that made me realize techno was the path I wanted to follow. The percussion, the groove and the driving energy made me fall deeply in love with techno, and I still feel the same today. It was the moment I knew this was the sound I wanted to dedicate myself to.

Beyond the music itself, what does techno mean to you?

For me, techno is more than just a genre — it’s a culture. Nowadays, people use the word “techno” for many different styles of electronic music, but proper techno will always remain the same. My inspiration comes from the earlier era, when techno was considered darker and attracted an alternative kind of crowd. That underground spirit is what still inspires me the most. It’s something I try to carry with me in both my productions and my DJ sets.

How would you describe the sound you’ve developed over the years?

I would describe my sound as driving techno with a lot of groove, subtle elements and constant movement. I like tracks that keep evolving without becoming overcrowded, allowing the groove and energy to do most of the work.

You also DJ at quite coveted venues, like Tresor. What do you enjoy most behind the decks personally?

For me, DJing is just as essential as producing. The interaction with the crowd is what I love most about DJing. I prepare just enough before a set, not too much, because I like to challenge myself by adapting to the people in front of me and creating the right connection.

Your journey spans more than two decades. What has kept you growing as an artist, and what advice would you give to emerging artists?

Over the years, I’ve always pushed myself to become better. While I’ve achieved some of my goals, I still practice almost every day. For me, learning never really stops, and that constant drive to improve has become one of the most important parts of my journey. My goal is always the same: to keep improving every single day, become the best version of myself as an artist, and let the music speak for itself.

That’s also my advice to emerging artists: work hard every day, stay humble, and keep your feet on the ground.

How does that mindset translate into your day-to-day workflow, and how do you stay creative?

I usually DJ for at least 45 minutes to an hour every day and spend around four hours producing. At weekends, when I have more free time, I usually spend even longer in the studio. In the studio I use Ableton as my DAW. I don’t always use the same hardware, but my Arturia MicroFreak and Roland SH-4d are always close by because I think they’re incredible machines.

Music is a huge part of my life. To stay inspired, I listen to a lot of different artists and try to understand what they are doing in their tracks. Then I challenge myself to recreate or reinterpret those ideas in my own productions. I’m always looking for ways to improve, whether that’s through experimenting in the studio or simply learning from the music that inspires me.

What made MEUK Records stand out to you as a label?

Honestly, I really like MEUK Records because you can tell they do everything from the heart. They genuinely love music, and you can see how much hard work and dedication they put into every release. I’m sure the label will continue to grow because of that passion.

Let’s finish with a question about your upcoming EP. Looking at it as a whole, what does it represent to you?

The Silent Noise EP is quite special to me because it was created during a transition from hardgroove towards the style I’m making today. At that time, I was still finding my own sound, and I felt these four tracks represented that journey really well. I’m very happy they were selected by the label.

With every track, I discovered new techniques and ideas, and each production helped me build on the previous one. Looking back, the EP really captures an important stage in my development as an artist.
